Mitchells Plain
Mitchell’s Plain is a large, sprawling coloured township built in 1970’ as the area for the coloured middle ncome group. Many families relocated here from District Six when it was razed to the ground.
Mitchell’s Plain lies about 28 kilometres from the city of Cape Town bordering on the False Bay coastline.
The rows of neat free standing, semi detatched and duplex houses stretch for miles between wide thoroughfares, large open spaces and public facilities .
A recent FNB Bank survey concluded that for every home put up for sale in Mitchell’s Plain, there are now eight potential buyers. Despite the apparent dreariness of the Cape Flats, space is a commodity!
Today Mitchell’s Plain houses almost a million residents and a diversity of class backgrounds. It is economically divided into east and west – prices of properties in the western half of Westridge, Rocklands and Portlands is higher than the eastern half of Tafelsig, Beacon Valley and Eastridge.
Sporting Facilities and Places of Interest
There are a number of sports ground facilities available in various parts of Mitchells plain for a variety of sports.
Mitchells Plain, is also home to the pretty Westridge Gardens Park, which is open every day and admission is free.
Thanks to the floral diversity of this park, it is a particularly pretty oasis in the heart of a bustling neighbourhood. Indigenous Cape fynbos is one of the park’s most valuable treasures as well as an exquisite rose garden. This has become famous for wedding photography and family picnics amongst the local residents.
There are a number of pathways through Westridge Gardens too, which are ideal for strolling, walking your dog (on a leash), or cycling. The play area is varied, with exciting equipment that is designed for children of different ages.
The Mnandi Beach is a blue flag beach popular with walkers, fisherman, swimmers and whale watchers. Mnandi is also ideal for families,there is a big swimming pool with fun waterslides, playground equipment on landscaped lawns, picnic spots and barbecue spots.
Wolfgat Nature Reserve consists of 248ha of endangered dune vegetation, majestic limestone cliffs with many scenic hikes along the cliffs. Keep your eyes peeled for fossils – a 45,000-year-old fossil den of a brown hyaena was discovered here
Public transport
Mitchells Plain is reasonably well served by public transport services comprising commuter rail, bus and mini-bus taxi services. There are 3 Cape Metrorail commuter rail stations within the area The rail line extends from Cape Town‘s CBD and the industrial areas at Epping.
The Mitchell’s Plain Public Transport Interchange at the Mitchell’s Plain Station include a major bus terminus and taxi rank which provides public transport services to every major employment area within the City of Cape Town during the morning peak period. There is regular scheduled bus and unscheduled mini-bus taxi services to Cape Town CBD, Claremont, Bellville, Wynberg, and other areas.
